How to Prep for Your Hair Appointment

Heading into the salon with your hair prepped can make all the difference in how the service rendered to you turns out and how quickly it gets done. Over the years, I’ve found that clear preparation not only speeds things up but also keeps our clients comfortable and stress-free. This process ensures that your appointment delivers exactly what you want. Here is what you need to know or do before you arrive for each of our key services.  1. Relax, cut, and style Pixie When you book this service, you’re choosing to soften your natural curl or wave pattern into a low-maintenance pixie cut that highlights your best features.  To get the most out of this process, we advise our clients to resist the urge to scratch, brush hard, or wash their hair for at least 3-5 days before their appointment. This hands-off window keeps your scalp calm so you won’t experience irritation or burns when we apply the relaxer. Your hair should be dry, detangled, and in its natural state, with no braids, twists, or heavy products. If you’ve had any scalp issues or irritation recently, let us know in advance so we can adjust the process. 2. Frontal and Closure Installs A frontal or closure install uses a lace piece to recreate your hairline for a natural finish.  If you’re reusing your closure or frontal, please make sure to remove all glue and product buildup; a clean lace makes for the cleanest and flattest install. And if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to wig adhesives, kindly tell us ahead of time.  To ensure the lace lies perfectly flat, we recommend you come with your hair washed, dried, and detangled unless you’ve added a prep wash to your booking. However, if you don’t want to do this yourself, you can mail your lace piece in advance so it’s ready as soon as you sit for your appointment. 3. Sew-in and Glued Tracks For this service, we fasten hair extensions onto your cornrows to add instant length and volume without heat. To get a flawless outcome, your hair needs to be clean, dry, and completely detangled. If you’re unsure whether it’s ready, simply book a wash & blow-dry before your installation. And if you’re opting for glued tracks, skip oils and heavy leave-in products, as they interfere with the adhesive’s grip. 4. Treatment (Protein and Intense Moisture) Our protein and intense moisture treatments are designed to revive strands that feel dry, break easily, or shed more than usual, especially after colour or heat styling. Leave your hair in its natural, product free state (unless you’ve scheduled a wash) so the treatment can penetrate deeply. We’ll assess your hair’s needs on the spot and choose between a strengthening protein boost, a dry-scalp therapy, or a deep hydration mask that brings brittle hair back to life. 5. Silk Press This transforms natural curls into straight, glossy hair without chemicals. To make this process quick and effective, come with detangled hair free of heavy creams or oils. If you’re coming straight out of braids or another protective style, it is important to let us know so we can set aside extra prep time. We’ll shampoo, treat, and gently press your hair into that shine-on finish. 6. Texture Release This service gently loosens your curl pattern without fully straightening it. Texture release is perfect if you’re transitioning or want a softer texture without harsh relaxers. This smoothing system works best on hair that hasn’t been freshly washed or scratched, so hands off! Do not touch your hair. That way, the formula can do its job without interference from shampoo residue or a sensitive scalp. 7. Colour Service (on Natural Hair) When you book a colour service on natural hair, you’re getting a custom shade that complements your skin tone and style. Please show up with hair that’s clean and free of oils or heavy products. If you’re new to our colour services, we’ll do a quick strand test at least 5 days before your full appointment. This simple check helps us avoid surprises and ensures your hair reacts beautifully to the dye. Arriving prepared means we can start creating the look you want immediately. If you have any questions beyond these tips, send us a message or book a quick consultation.

Can I Relax and Colour My Hair at the Same Time?

As women, our looks mean a lot to us, and sometimes, we just feel like switching things up. More often than not, the change starts with our hair. You know that feeling when you’re scrolling through Instagram, TikTok or Pinterest, admiring hair with rich tones and styles, and suddenly, you’re picturing your hair smooth, sleek, freshly relaxed or glowing in a rich new shade.  You are already looking forward to a fresh look, bold transformation, or just something new to match the season or your vibe. While switching up your hair is exciting, doing too much at once can turn that excitement into a full-blown hair emergency, especially when colour and relaxers are involved. A question we get all the time is, “Can I relax and colour my hair on the same day?” It might sound like a time-saving glow-up hack; the answer is a firm no (at least, not if you care about the health of your hair). Why You shouldn’t do both Treatments at once The reason is that both relaxing and colouring involve strong chemicals that alter your hair structure. When done together or even too close together, they can strip your strands of moisture and strength, leading to dryness, breakage, and major regrets. We’ve had clients who come in asking for both on the same day, maybe because of time or budget, but we always explain the risks. Overlapping these treatments can overprocess the hair, weaken the strands, and cause more harm than good. So what’s the safe way to go about it? Our golden rule? At least two weeks in between. As a hairstylist who’s seen countless heads of hair walk through that door over the years, my professional recommendation is to relax the hair first. And this is precisely why we recommend consultation. It’s not just a quick chat; it’s a vital step! We need to get to know your hair’s current state, understand its health, and then, and only then, can we customise a routine that will work with your hair, not against it, to achieve your desired look safely. Before getting a relaxer, do not scratch, wash, or tug at your hair. Just bring it in its natural, untouched state. That “don’t touch” rule helps protect your scalp from irritation or chemical burns during the relaxer application. No one wants that kind of surprise. Colouring After Relaxing Once your hair is beautifully relaxed and you’ve given it some time to recover, then you can safely venture into colouring. At this stage, we often recommend going darker rather than significantly lighter. This is because lightening already-relaxed hair often involves bleaching, and that’s adding another layer of intensity that can compromise your hair’s strength. Another thing to note before colouring fully is the patch test. It is non-negotiable. We always urge clients who are getting a colour with us for the first time to book a session with us.It’s a simple check to make sure you don’t have any allergies and helps us understand how your hair might respond to the dye. While the idea of a quick two-in-one hair makeover might sound tempting, giving your hair the proper attention, care, and a little breathing room between services like colouring and relaxing will ultimately lead to healthier, happier, and undeniably more beautiful results. Thinking of colouring or relaxing soon? Book a consultation with us. Let’s help you make hair decisions your future self will thank you for.
