5 things to know before you buy a wig

Buying a wig is a whole different experience. It’s not just a quick trip to the store; it’s an investment in your look and your confidence. And nobody wants to waste money on a wig that ends up collecting dust. We’ve all been there. You saw a wig that looked fabulous online and decided to buy it, but you realised it wasn’t the perfect fit.

Trust me, as a wig specialist, my clients have brought a lot of that in. I’ve seen it all.

So, before you click “add to cart” or head to the wig shop, let’s have a real conversation. We’re talking about finding your perfect wig, not just any wig.  Let’s face it, wigs aren’t cheap, and you deserve to get it right your first time.

The things you need to consider before buying a wig are not far-fetched and I’ll be sharing

1. Your Lifestyle:

How demanding is your daily schedule? This is a very important question  you need to answer. Think about your actual life. Do you have ample time for styling, or is it more of a grab-and-go situation? This is huge when choosing a wig. A lace frontal, while stunning, can be a bit high-maintenance. Think of it like this: if you’re constantly rushing out the door, a closure wig might be your new best friend. It’s easy to throw on and still looks fabulous. And hey, are you looking for a wig for everyday wear or just special occasions? Frontals are great for glam events, while closures are perfect for that “I woke up like this” vibe. In essence, your wig should make your life easier, not harder!
However, if you can handle the frontals yourself, then you can wear it everyday.

2. Personal Style

I always ask my client about their personal style. It’s not advisable to jump on the latest trends, especially when they are not your style. Think about what makes you feel like your best self and choose a wig that fits who you are. Do you love long, flowing hair? Or are you more of a chic, short-hair person? Curly, straight, wavy? The options are endless! Also, if you’re new to wigs, natural shades are a great starting point. For me, I’m more comfortable with subtle colours. You also need to consider your face shape and parting. A good wig specialist (or a friend with a good eye!) can help you figure out what flatters your features best. Remember, confidence is your best accessory, so pick a wig that makes you shine!

3. Quality:

You absolutely need to pick a wig that fits your budget, but here’s the thing: investing in a quality wig is always worth it. You can get a good synthetic wig but, if you’re serious about longevity and versatility, human hair is where it’s at. Think of it as a long-term relationship, not a quick fling. You can style it, colour it, and treat it just like your own hair, and it’ll keep looking fabulous for ages. And speaking of looking fabulous, let’s talk lace. HD lace is like the VIP of lace fronts. It’s thinner, blends seamlessly with your skin, and gives that “scalp realness” that everyone wants. But, as you might have guessed, it comes with a higher price tag. So, here’s the thing: your budget and the look you’re going for are intertwined. They work together. Don’t just go for the cheapest option if you want a high-end look. Figure out what you can comfortably spend and prioritize quality features like good lace and human hair if you can. It’s an investment in your confidence, and guess what? You’re worth it!

4. Texture:

This is where you get to decide what kind of hair vibe you’re going for. Do you love that natural texture? Or are you all about that sleek, polished look? Maybe you want to rock some serious volume? Whatever you choose, remember that texture plays a major role in how much maintenance your wig will need

Curly hair is gorgeous, but it’s a bit of a commitment. It needs extra love, like regular moisturising and careful detangling. Straight hair, on the other hand, is generally easier to manage—a quick brush and you’re good to go. And if you’re rocking a kinky texture, it’ll need a unique care routine.

Choose a texture that matches your actual lifestyle. If you’re always on the go, a high-maintenance texture might not be the best fit. Don’t just pick a texture because it looks great on someone else. Pick what works for you and your schedule. At the end of the day, you want a wig that makes you feel amazing without adding unnecessary stress to your life.

5. Consultation and Fitting

There’s absolutely no point in throwing money at a wig you’re never going to wear. I’ve seen it happen – people get caught up in the online hype, buy a wig that looks amazing on a model, and then it just sits there. And, hey, I sell wigs online too, so I get the temptation! Here’s the thing: a consultation with a wig specialist is worth its weight in gold.

Think of it as getting personalised advice tailored just for you. They’ll ask you the right questions about your lifestyle, style preferences, and budget. All these will help you navigate all those choices we’ve talked about. They can really help you figure out what’s going to work best for you.

And as you know, a good fit is everything! A wig that doesn’t fit properly will look off. It might slide around, feel uncomfortable, or just not sit right. How your wig fits directly impacts how it looks. A wig specialist can make sure you get the right size and style for your head shape, giving you that natural, flawless look we’re all after. So, don’t skip the consultation! It’s an investment in your confidence and ensures you get a wig you’ll actually love wearing.

Remember, finding the perfect wig isn’t just about grabbing the latest trend; it’s about investing in a piece that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and truly you.
